Another Way

The train clanked and rattled through the suburbs of Tokyo on a drowsy spring afternoon. Our car was comparatively empty - a few housewives with their kids in tow, some old folks going shopping. I gazed absently at the drab houses and dusty hedgerows.

At one station the doors opened, and suddenly the afternoon quiet was shattered by a man bellowing violent, incomprehensible curses. The man staggered into our car. He wore laborer’s clothing and was big, drunk and dirty. Screaming, he swung at a woman holding a baby. The blow sent her spinning into the laps of an elderly couple. It was a miracle that the baby was unharmed.
Terrified, the couple jumped up and scrambled toward the other end of the car. The laborer aimed a kick at the reatreating back of the old woman but missed as she scuttled to safety. This so enraged the drunk that he grabbed the metal pole in the center of the car and tried to wrench it out of its stanchion. I could see that one of his hands was cut and bleeding. The train lurched ahead, the passengers frozen with fear. I stood up.

I was young, then, some 20 years ago, and in pretty good shape. I’d been putting in a solid eight hours of Aikido training nearly every day for the past three years. I liked to throw and grapple. I thought I was tough. The trouble was, my martial skill was untested in actual combat. As student of Aikido, we were not allowed to fight.

“Aikito,” my teacher had said again and again, “is the art of reconciliation. Whoever has the mind to fight has broken his connection with the universe. If you try to dominate people, you’re already defeated. We study how to resolve conflict, not how to start it.”

I listened to his words. I tried hard. I even went so far as to cross the stree to avoid the “chimpira,” the pinball punks who lounged around the train stations. My forbearance exalted me. I felt both tough and hly. In my heart, however, I wanted an absolute legitimate opportunity whereby I might save the innocent by destroying the guilty.

“This is it!” I said to myself as I go to my feet. “People are in danger. If I don’t do something fast, somebody will probably get hurt.”

Seeing me stand up, the drunk recognized a chance to focus his rage. “Aha!” he roared. “A foreigner! You need a lesson in Japanese manners!”

I held on lighly to the commuter strap overhead and gave him a slow look of disgust and dismissal. I planned to take this turkey apart, but he had to make the first move. I wanted him mad, so I pursed my lips and blew him an insolent kiss.

“All right!” he hollered.” Your gonna get a lesson!” He gathered himself for a rush at me.

A fraction of a second before he could move, someone shouted “Hey!” It was earsplitting. I remember the stangely joyous, lilting quality of it - as though you and a friend had been searching, diligently for something and he had suddenly stumbled upon it. “Hey!”

I wheeled to my left; the drunk spun to to his right. We both stared down at a little old Japanese man. He must have been well into his seventies, this tiny gentleman, sitting there immaculate in his kimono. He took no notice of me, but beamed delightedly at the laborer, as though he had a most important, most welcome secret to share.

“C’mere,” the old said in an easy vernacular, beckoning to the drunk, “C’mere and talk with me.” He waved his hands lightly.
The big man followed, as if on a string. He planted his feet belligerently in front of the old gentleman and roared above the clacking wheels, “Why the hell should I talk to you?” The drunk now had his back to me. If his elbow moved so much as a millimeter, I’d drop him in his socks.

The old man continued to beam at the laborer. “Whatcha been drinkin?” he asked, his eyes sparkling with interest. “I been drinkin’ sake,” the laborer bellowed back,” and it’s none of your business!” Flecks of spittle spattered the old man.

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” the old man said, “absolutely wonderful! You see, I love sake too. Every night, me and my wife (she’s 76 you know) we warm up a little bottle of sake and take it out into the garden, and we sit on an old wooden bench. We watch the sun go down, and we look to see how our persimmon tree is doing. My great-grandfather planted that tree, and we worry about whether it will recover from thos ice storms we had last winter. Our tree has done better than I expected, though, especially when you consider the poor quality of the soil. It is gratifying to watch when we take our sake and go out to enjoy the evening - even when it rains!” He looked up at the laborer, eyes twinking.

As he struggled to follow the old man, his face began to soften. His fists slowly unclenched, “yeah,” he said “I love persimmons, too.....” His voice trailed off.

“Yes,” said the old man, smiling,” and I’m sure you have a wonderful wife.”

“No,” replied the laborer. “My wife died.” Very gently; swaying with the motion of the train, the big man began to sob. “I don’t got no wife, I don’t go no home, I don’t go no job. I’m so ashamed of myself.” Tears rolled down his cheeks, a spasm of despair rippled though his body.

As I stook there in my well-scrubbled youthful innocence, my make-this-world-safe-for-democracy righteousenss, I felt dirtier than he was.

Then the train arrived at my stop. As the doors opened, I heard the old man cluck sympathetically. “My, my” he said, “that is a difficult predicmanet indeed. Sit down here and tell me about it.”

I turned my head for one last look. The laborer was sprawled on the seat with his head in the old man’s lap. The old man was softly stroking the filthy, matted hair.

As the train pulled away, I sat down on a bench in the station. What I had wanted to do with muscled had been accomplished with kind words. I had just seen Aikido in action, and the essence of it was love. I would have to practice the art with an entirely different spirit. It would be a long time before I could speak about the resolution of conflict.

Life Lesson Practical Internet

---------------------------------------

The Front Nine Principles

Principle #1
In golf, it is important to have a good grip on the club. In life, it is important to have a good grip on oneself and on the game of life.
In either game, if we do not have a good grip, then we will have to make many awkward corrections and adjustments to compensate for not starting with the basics. Just as a good grip is a foundation for all that we do in golf, understanding oneself gives us a foundation for all that we do in life.

Principle #2
In golf, it is important to have a proper stance and proper balance. In life, it is also important to have a proper stance and a proper balance.
We are in balance when we plant our feet equally on the ground. If we put all our weight on one foot (our job, our relationship, our self interest, our fun, or our hobbies) we will be out of balance. When that happens, the game of golf and the game of life become a struggle. When out of balance, we are more likely to fall down, miss the target, or lose our valuables in the rough.

Principle #3
In golf, it is important to develop a good swing. In life, it is important to be able to swing with it, to go with the flow.

Timing is crucial and a good swing comes from practicing it, not just letting it happen by itself. Change that feels unpleasant or awkward at first, becomes easier and more natural with practice. In life, as in golf, watching someone who is swinging effortlessly and who is having fun, is a joy to behold.

Principle #4
In golf it is important to follow through. In life it is also important to follow through.
The swing does not stop when we reach the ball. It continues on through so we can look up and see our results. Our role does not stop when we hang up the phone, send off the letter, or wave good-bye. It is important to keep watching to see the results of our actions so that we know what to keep and what to change.
Following through shows style as well as substance. Following through allows us to enjoy the results of our efforts. Take a moment to appreciate and revel in the work you have done.

Principle #5
In golf, we play with old friends or make new ones. In life, it is important to have old friends and make new ones.

In golf as in life, it is important to have friends with whom we can share our successes and laugh about our misses. Although we play different holes, at different times, and on different courses, we are all in the game together.

Principle #6
In golf, instant successes, (such as a hole-in-one), are very rare. In life, instant successes are also very rare.

We improve mainly through practice. In golf and in life, it is important to first identify the target, our goal. We rarely get there in one stroke. We approach the holes and goals in several steps. We make corrections along the way. Unless we give up, no mistakes are permanent. We can always shoot again from a new angle.

Principle #7
In golf, we sometimes lose our ball in the rough. In life, we sometimes lose our way in the rough, rough times.

There are times when we have to start over with a new ball. Yet, we do not have to go back to the beginning. We may lose a few points, but we can keep going, perhaps a little wiser for the experience. Sometimes we find hidden treasures in the rough: hidden strengths, or hidden opportunities. Eventually, we can rejoin our group and get back on course.

Principle #8
In golf, it is better to focus on what we are doing well, rather than losing our cool over our errors. In life, it is better to focus on what we are doing well and what is going well, rather than losing our cool.

Focusing on the negative is like playing the game while wearing very dark sunglasses. You cannot see the ball, and you cannot see the goal. It is too easy to lose sight of the goal and view everything as darkness. Dark attitudes color every experience with negativity, impairing our vision and our passion. Removing those dark attitudes brings a clarity of vision. Instead of hiding from the fear or adversity, we grow stronger by confronting our fears.

Principle #9
In golf, as good players, we repair our divots and ball marks. In life, as good citizens, we make amends for our mistakes.

In both, we try to leave the world a little better than we found it. We can do that by repairing not only our errors, but also those errors that others have made. By repairing more than our share we can set in motion positive waves that ripple outward, touching many others with our kindness.

In golf as in life, we get to start over with each swing. Both games are more pleasant when we stop keeping score, and work on helping each other become better players.

Life Lesson Quote Mark: 8:36

---------------------------------------

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...
you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...
you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace...you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still married...
you are very rare, even in the United States.
If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful...you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
Count your blessings!

Don't Be Afraid To Fail

You've failed many times, although you may not remember. You fell down the first time you tried to walk. You almost drowned the first time you tried to swim, didn't you? Did you hit the ball the first time you swung a bat? Heavy hitters, the ones who hit the most home runs, also strike out a lot.

R.H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New York caught on.
English novelist John Creasey got 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books.

Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times, but he also hit 714 home runs.
Don't worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don't even try.

Quotes for Living Well!

1.Know Thyself – Socrates. From ancient Greece comes this reminder that introspection, keeping a journal, paying attention to the heart of things, comes first. Before we can know the world around us, and make wise choices, we must first come to grips with who we are and what we value.

2.To Thine Own Self Be True – Shakespeare. In life there is no substitute for integrity. My grandmother was fond of saying, "We either stand for something, or we'll fall for anything." Integrity is about going beyond the truth to full and complete honesty, openness and fairness.

3.And the Greatest of These is Love – St Paul. He also observed that "without love I am just a clanging symbol or a noisy gong." Without love, caring relationships, and compassion, life is indeed a dry and shallow thing.

4.Imagination Rules the World – Albert Einstein. The good life is at least partly based on dreams that are worthy of us, dreams that elevate and challenge and inspire our best. Bobby Kennedy noted, "Others look at the world and ask, 'Why?' I dream of a world that never was and ask, 'Why not?'" Martin Luther King's defiant cry, "I have a dream!" will live long after most of us are gone andforgotten.

5.’Too much of a good thing is just right.” – Mae West. The good life is about living large, about expressing the joy and love of life. It's about song, exuberance, and about taking chances, and "going for it".

6.Opportunities multiply as they are seized – SunTzu. Success depends on the courage to act, and courage in turn requires a level of faith that every opportunity acted upon will lead to more and better ways to serve, learn, grow and prosper.

7.Do, or do not. There is no "try". – Yoda (The Empire Strikes Back). Life requires action, boldness and decisiveness. Mae West also observed, "He who hesitates is a damned fool."

8.Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away – Antoine de St. Exupery.

Henry Thoreau recommended, "Simplify, simplify, simplify. Let your concerns be as 2 or 3, not more." Friends, work, the media and this thing called the Internet, along with our own "wish lists" try to seduce us to complexity, busy-ness and anxiety. Keep it simple!

9.The artist is nothing without gift, but gift is nothing without work –

Emile Zola. Only focused, intelligent, diligent effort turns potential into reality. Without creative effort, talent and "gift" seem to atrophy and die. Truly a case of "use it or lose it".

10.There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. – Albert Einstein. I highly recommend practicing the attitude of gratitude. What else is there?

The Hand - Chicken Soup for the Soul
A Thanksgiving Day editoral in the newspaper told of a school teacher who asked her class of first graders to graw a picture of something they were thankful for. She though of how little these children from poor neighborhoods actually had to be thankful for. But she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys or tables with food. The teacher was taken aback with the picture Douglas handed in....a simple childishly drawn hand.

But whose hand? The class was captivated by the abstract image. “I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food,” said one child. “A farmer,” said another, “because he grows the turkeys.” Finally when the others were at work, the teacher bent over Douglas’s desk and asked whose hand it was. “It’s your hand, Teacher,” he mumbled.

She recalled that frequently at recess she had taken Douglas, a crubby forlorn child by the hand. She often did that with the children. But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this was everyone’s Thanksgiving, not for the material things given to us but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.

The Richest Man in Babylon - George Clason
1. “For each ten coins I put in, to spend but nine.”

2. “Budget thy expenses that thou mayest have coins to pay for
thy necesities, to pay for thy enjoyments and to gratify thy worthwhile desires without spending more than nine-tenths of thy earnings.

3. “To put each coin to laboring that it may reproduce its kind even as the flocks of the field and help bring to thee income, a stream of wealth that shall flow constantly into thy purse.

4. “Guard thy treasure from loss by investing only where thy principal is safe, where it may be reclaimed if desirable, and where thou will not fail to collect a fair rental. Consult with wise men. Secure the advice of those experienced in the profitble handling of god. Let their wisdom protect thy treasure from unsafe investments.

5. “Own thy own home.

6. “Provide in advance for the needs of thy growing age and the protection
of thy family.

7. “Is to cultivate thy own powers, to study and become wiser, to become more skillful, to so act as to respect thyself.”

8. Good luck can be enticed by accepting opportunity.

You're driving a bus that is leaving from Pennsylvania and ending in New York.
To start off with, there were 32 passengers on the bus. At the next bus stop, 11 people get off and 9 people get on. At the next bus stop, 2 people got off and 2 people got on. At the next bus stop, 12 people got on and 16 people got off. At the next bus stop, 5 people got on and 3 people got off.

What color are the bus driver's eyes?

The key to understanding the problem is focusing on the right information. If we assume it is critical to keep track of the number of people getting on and off the bus, we focus on information that turns out to be Unessential. It distracts us from the important information.

The answer to the problem is found in the first sentence. YOU are driving the bus so the color is of course the color of YOUR eyes.

If you didn't get it right, don't worry. The majority of people don't answer correctly. If you got it right, you have exceptional problem solving skills.

One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high-powered over-achievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz," and he pulled out a one-gallon mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. He also produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled
to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?"

Everyone in the class yelled, "Yes.

The time management expert replied, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He dumped some gravel in and shook the jar allowing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. He then asked the group once more, "Is the jar full now?"

By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered. "Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full now?" "No!" the class shouted.

Once again he said, "Good." Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?" One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!"

"No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth this illustration
teaches us is: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them
in at all. What are the 'big rocks' in your life? Time with your loved ones,
your faith, your education, your dreams, a worthy cause, creating, building,
teaching or mentoring others? Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all." So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the 'big rocks' in my life? Then, put those in your jar first.

Story: Life is a reflection....

A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, the son
falls, hurts himself and screams, "AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!" To his surprise, he
hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain,"AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: "Who are you?" He receives the answer: "Who are you?" Angered at the response, he screams: "Coward!" He receives the answer: "Coward!"

He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?" The father smiles and
says: "My son, pay attention.

And then he screams to the mountain: "I admire you!" The voice answers: "I admire you!" Again the man screams: "You are a champion!" The voice answers: "You are a champion!"

The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father explains:
"People call this ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our actions.

You want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence in your team, improve your competence. This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life; Life will give you back
everything you have given to it."

Everything you need to know about life - after Grade School

The following was directed toward newly graduating high school and college students. It is a list of things they did not learn in school. The author writes about how feel-good, politically correct teaching has created a generation of kids with no concept of reality, thus setting them up for failure in the real world. (Many of these points need to be drilled into the heads of the general population as well.)

Rule 1. Life is not fair. Get used to it.

Rule 2. The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3. You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.

Rule 4. If you think your teachers were tough, wait 'till you get a boss. He/she doesn't have tenure.

Rule 5. Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.

Rule 6. If you mess up, it's not your parents' or someone else's fault. Don't whine about your mistakes. Learn from them.

Rule 7. Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8. Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades. They'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9. Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you "find" yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10. Television is NOT real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11. Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Rule 12. If God had wanted you to have extra holes in your body parts, He would have put them there as original equipment.

Rule 13. Free speech does not include trampling on the Flag, Constitution or the rights of others.

Rule 14. Civilian stems from the word "civil." Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have the right to say or display anything you please - just to see if you can get away with it.

Rule 15. Learn quickly that "Do Unto Others" applies to YOU, too.

"Stanley Millgram set up a laboratory experiment. It was to see if he could get randomly selected people off the street to follow the instructions of an authoritarian "doctor" in a laboratory. It was an experiment to have a subject administer a mild shock to a stranger in another room, every time the stranger forgot something he had memorized from a list. Holding a clipboard, the doctor simply prodded, "You must continue. This experiment requires you to continue." The subject would then be expected to turn up the voltage and electrocute someone in another room every time the person made a memory mistake. Between 60 to 80 % of the randomly selected subjects in several experiments were willing to obey to the point of giving the stranger in the other room a heart attack. Many of the subjects had been WWII veterans and they had to be deprogrammed after the experiment because they were shocked to see that they were no different than the Nazis lighting the ovens to murder Jews." AN EDUCATION ----
Four friends went up to Dallas for a party the weekend before finals. After the party, they slept all Sunday and didn't make it back to Austin until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and explain to him why they missed it. They said they went to Dallas for the weekend with the plan to come back and study. Unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn't have a spare, and couldn't get help for a while. The Professor thought it over and said they could make up the final the following day. They studied that night and went in the next day. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, worth 5 points. It was something simple. "Cool," they thought at the same time, each one in this separate room. "This is going to be easy." Each finished the problem and then turned the page. On the second page was written: (For 95 points): Which tire?

In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft Error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules. Each poem has only three lines, 17 syllables: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, five in the third. INSP102- The Gold Wrapping Paper
Have you ever regretted the way you disciplined a student.? Here's a good lesson.

The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive old wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became even more upset when the child pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." The father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He spoke to her in a harsh manner: "Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package? The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees an put his arms around his little girl, and begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later and it is told that the father kept that gold bow by his bed for all the years of his life. And whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box and take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love.

Superintendent of Schools for the Lancaster County School District
The Best Dentist

"Absolutely" the Best Dentist

My dentist is great! He sends me reminders so I don't forget checkups. He uses the latest techniques based on research. He never hurts me, and I've got all my teeth, so when I ran into him the other day, I was eager to see if he'd heard about the new state program. I knew he'd think it was great.

"Did you hear about the new state program to measure effectiveness of dentists with their young patients?" I said.

"No," he said. He didn't seem too thrilled. "How will they do that?"

"It's quite simple," I said. "They will just count the number of cavities each patient has at age 10, 14, and 18 and average that to determine a dentist's rating. Dentists will be rated as Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average, and Unsatisfactory. That way parents will know which are the best dentists. It will also encourage the less effective dentists to get better, " I said.

"Poor dentists who don't improve could lose their licenses to practice.
"
"That's terrible," he said.

"What? That's not a good attitude," I said. "Don't you think we should try to improve children's dental health in this state?"

"Sure I do," he said, "but that's not a fair way to determine who is practicing good dentistry."

"Why not?" I said. "It makes perfect sense to me."

"Well, it's so obvious," he said. "Don't you see that dentists don't all work with the same clientele; so much depends on things we can't control? For example," he said, "I work in a rural area with a high percentage of patients from deprived homes, while some of my colleagues work in upper middle class neighborhoods. Many of the parents I work with don't bring their children to see me until there is some kind of problem and I don't get to do much preventive work.

Also," he said, "many of the parents I serve let their kids eat way too much candy from an early age, unlike more educated parents who understand the relationship between sugar and decay. To top it all off," he added, "so many of my clients have well water which is untreated and has no fluoride in it. Do you have any idea how much difference early use of fluoride can make?"

"It sounds like you're making excuses," I said. I couldn't believe my dentist would be so defensive. He does a great job.

"I am not!" he said. "My best patients are as good as anyone's, my work is as good as anyone's, but my average cavity count is going to be higher than a lot of other dentists because I chose to work where I am needed most."

"Don't' get touchy," I said.

"Touchy?" he said. His face had turned red and from the way he was clenching and unclenching his jaws, I was afraid he was going to damage his teeth. "Try furious. In a system like this, I will end up being rated average, below average, or worse. My more educated patients who see these ratings may believe this so-called rating actually is a measure of my ability and proficiency as a dentist. They may leave me, and I'll be left with only the most needy patients. Any my cavity average score will get even worse. On top of that, how will I attract good dental hygienists and other excellent dentists to my practice if it is labeled below average?"

"I think you are overreacting," I said. " 'Complaining, excuse making and stonewalling won't improve dental health'...I am quoting from a leading member of the DOC," I noted.

"What's the DOC?" he asked.

"It's the Dental Oversight Committee," I said, "a group make up of mostly laypersons to make sure dentistry in this state gets improved."

"Spare me," he said, "I can't believe this. Reasonable people won't buy it," he said hopefully.

The program sounded reasonable to me, so I asked, "How else would you measure good dentistry?"

"Come watch me work," he said. "Observe my processes."

"That's too complicated and time consuming," I said.

"Cavities are the bottom line, and you can't argue with the bottom line. It's an absolute measure."

"That's what I'm afraid my parents and prospective patients will think. This can't be happening," he said despairingly.

"Now, now," I said, "don't despair. The state will help you some."

"How?" he said.

"If you're rated poorly, they'll send a dentist who is rated excellent to help straighten you out," I said brightly.

"You mean," he said, "they'll send a dentist with a wealthy clientele to show me how to work on severe juvenile dental problems with which I have probably had much more experience? Big help."

"There you go again," I said. "You aren't acting professionally at all."
"You don't get it," he said. "Doing this would be like grading schools and teachers on an average score on a test of children's progress without regard to influences outside the school, the home, the community served and stuff like that. Why would they do something so unfair to dentists? No one would ever think of doing that to schools."

I just shook my head sadly, but he had brightened. "I'm going to write my representatives and senator," he said. "I'll use the school analogy-surely they will see the point."

He walked off with that look of hope mixed with fear and suppressed anger that I see in the mirror so often lately.

THE TEACHER

This story was passed along to me on the internet. I believe that it has been circulating for a while and I think that the full story may be in the original Chicken Soup for the Soul. I hope you enjoy it and are inspired!

One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of
their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.
On Monday she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much." were most of the comments.

No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another.

That group of students moved on. Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student.
She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature. The church was packed! with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin.

As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot."

After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.
"We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it."

Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.

"Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it."

All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list It's in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times, " Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists."

That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be.

Remember, you reap what you sow, what you put into the lives of others comes back into your own.

SPARKY

From Chicken Soup for the Tennage Soul
by Jack Canfield, Mark Hanse, and Kimberly Kirberger © 1997 Health Communications, Inc.
pp.192-193

For Sparky, school was all but impossible. He failed every subject in the eight grade. He flunked physics in high school, getting a grade of zero. Sparky also flunked Latin, algebra and English. He didn’t do much better in sports. Although he did manage to make the school’s golf team, he promptly lost the only important match of the season. There was a consolation match; he lost that, too.
Throughout his youth Sparky was awkward socially. He was not actually disliked by the other students; no on cared that much. He was astonished if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours. There’s no way to tell how he might have done at dating. Sparky never once asked a girl to go out in high school. He was too afraaid of being turned down.

Sparky was a loser. He, his classmates....everyone knew it. So he rolled with it. Sparky had made up his mind early in life that if things were meant to work out, they would. Otherwise he would content himself with what appeared to be his inevitable mediocrity.

However, one thing was important to Sparky - drawing. He was pround of his artwork. Of course no one appreciated it. In his senior year of high school, he submitted some cartoons to the editors of the yearbook. The cartoons were turned down. Despite this particular rejection, Sparky was so convinced of his ability that he decided to become a professional artist.

After completing high school, he wrote a aletter to Walt Disney Studios. He was told to send some samples of his artwoork, and the subject for a cartoon was suggested. Sparky drew the proposed cartoon. He spent a great deal of time on it and on all the other drawings he submitted. Finally, the replay came from Disney Sutdios. He had been rejected once again. Another loss for the loser....
So Sparky decided to write his own autobiography in cartoons. He described his childhood self - a little boy loser and chronic underachiever. The cartoon character would soon become famous worldwide. For Sparky, the boy who had such lack of success in school and whose work was rejected again and again, was Charles Schultz. He created the “Peanuts” comic strip and the little cartoon character whose kite would never fly and who never succeeded in kicking a fooball, Charlie Brown.

Abraham Lincoln Didn’t Quit
Chicken Soup for the Soul

The sense of obligation to continue is present in all of us. A duty to strive is the duty of us all. I felt a call to that duty. A. Lincoln.

Probably the greatest example of persistence is Abraham Lincoln. If you want to learn somebody who didn’t quit, look no further.

Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.
He could have quit many times - but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit. He became one of the greatest presidents in the history of our county.

• 1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
• 1818 His mother died.
• 1831 Failed in business
• 1832 - Ran for state legislature - lost
• 1832 - Also lost his job - applied for law school but could not get in.
• 1833 - Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
• 1834 - Ran for state legislature again - won
• 1835 - Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken
• 1836 - Had a total nervous breakwon and was in bed for six months.
• 1838 - Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated.
• 1840 - Sought to become elector - defeated.
• 1843 - Ran for Congress - lost.
• 1846 - Ran for Congress again - won - went to Washington and did a good job.
• 1848 - Ran for Congress - lost.
• 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected
• 1854 - Ran for Senate of the United States - lost.
• 1856 - Sought the Vice-Presential nomination at his party’s national convention - got less than 100 votes.
• 1858 - Ran for US Senate again - lost again
• 1860 - Elected president of the United States.

VALUE CLARIFICATION EXERCISE

(For mature secondary or college students only)

The River Crossing - Tarzan and Jane

One day in darkest Africa a young maiden named Jane sat on the side of a river and was told that the man - Tarzan was sick and needed instant care or else he would die.

She went to the boatman and asked his help to cross the river which was infested with crocadiles. The boatman listened attentively and said "I have been in love with you my whole life and now you want me to take you across the river to another man. I will do it but only if you will have sex with me."

Jane debated with herself and her options. She finally went to the boatman and after a long discussion he took her across the river the next day.

Jane rushed to Tarzan side and and after treating him for many days restored him to health. Tarzan asked Jane "How did you get across the river?" Jane told him everything after which Tarzan said "Tarzan no love Jane anymore - Jane go away."

Jane cried in disbelief and left Tarzan alone.

TEACHER:

Have the students (secondary student & above) rank the three individuals in the order that they admire most. (Jane, Tarzan, Boatman). You can ask them to assemble in groups of the person most admired.

Next ask one person from each group to explain why they think their person was the most admired. (Do not comment on their choices.)

Allow students (one at a time) to try and convert people from the other groups.

Closure questions:

Did Jane have sex with the boatman? While the boatman initially requested sex with Jane all that was said "that following a long discussion the next day he took her across the river." You can infer that sex took place but there is no proof

Did Tarzan believe Jane had sex with the boatman? All that was said was "How did you get across the river?" Jane told him everything after which Tarzan said "Tarzan no love Jane anymore - Jane go away."

Did the boatman have sex with Jane? All that was said was “She finally went to the boatman and after a long discussion he took her across the river the next day.”

A good closure might be a discussion of “assumptions” in problem solving.... ASS U ME....

In the 1990’s, a twelfth grade education is necessary to reach the same level. Today, a college graduate earns more than twice as much as someone iwth less that 12 years of education. We now suffer from the greatest gap between high and low income earners in the history of our nation.

Is Technology Working?

Our children come into our schools today “Sesame Street” wise, Sea-circuited, and MTV-literate. They have watched thousands of hours of television and spent hundreds of hours playing electronic games even before they come to kindergarten. They receive 50-75 percent of their information from video and graphic sources. They are comfortable with technology. They grew up with it. It is the learning environment within which they have had the majority of their experiences. We adults, as parents, have provided them with that environment and, for the most part, left them on their own to explore and interpret it prior to entering the school system.

And then we send them into our schools, where 80-90% of the activities are still text-based. We take them out of the rich, multi-mediate enviroments of the home and neighborhood in which they have become interactively “literate” with their world and put them into the functionally mono-mediate environments of most classrooms and libraries where we attempt to dumb them down to what Symour Papert has called “letterate” learners.
“There are thousands of buildings in this country, will millions of people in them who have no telephones, no cable television, and no reasonable prospect of broadband services . They are called schools.”

A Special Teacher

Years ago a John Hopkin's professor gave a group of graduate students this assignment: Go to the slums. Take 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and investigate their background
and environment. Then predict their chances for the future.

The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and compiling much data, concluded that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in jail.

Twenty-five years later another group of graducate students was given the job of testing the prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys - by then men - were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the original 200. They found that only four of the group had ever beensent to jail.

Why was it that these men, who had lived in a breeding place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were continually told: "Well, there was a teacher..."

They pressed further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a home for retired teachers. How had she exerted this remarkable influence over that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her?

"No," she said, "no I really couldn't." And then, thinking back over the years, she said musingly, more to herself than to her questioners: "I loved those boys...."

Lessons from Geese

Fact 1: As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson 1: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Fact 2: When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front of it.

Lesson 2: If we have as much common sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Fact 3: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.

Lesson 3: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each others' skills, capabilities, and unique arrangements of gifts,
talents, or resources.

Fact 4: Geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson 4: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

Fact 5: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson 5: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

NINE FAMOUS IRISHMEN

In the Young Irish Disorders of 1848, nine men were captured, tried and convicted of treason against HRH Queen Victoria and were sentenced to death. Their names were: Duffy, Meagher, McManus, Donahue, O'Gorman, Lyene, Ireland, McGee and Mitchell.

Before passing sentence, the judge asked if they wished to say anything. Meagher spoke for all and said, "My Lord, this is our first offence but not our last. If you will be easy with us this once, we promise on our word as gentlemen, to try and do better next time. And next time, we sure won't be fools to get caught."

Thereupon, the indignant judge sentenced them all to be hanged by the neck until dead, drawn and quartered and their body parts to be displayed as a lesson to all others who would think of rebelling against the Crown. But, passionate protest from around the world convinced the Queen to commute their sentences to life and transport to a prison in the wilds of Australia.

In 1874, word reached an astounded Queen Victoria that the Sir Charles Duffy who was Prime Minister of Australia, was the same Charles Duffy who had been convicted of treason twenty-five years before. On the Queen's demand, the lives of the other eight Irishmen were researched and this is what they revealed. While some stayed in Australia, others left for North America.

· Thomas Francis Meagher, Governor of the US State of Montana.
· Terrence McManus, General, US Army.
· Patrick Donahue, General, US Army.
· Richard O'Gorman, Governor General of the Canadian Province of Newfoundland.
· Morris Lyene, Attorney General of Australia.
· Michael Ireland, succeeded Lyene as Attorney General of Australia.
· Thomas Darcy McGee, MP from Montreal, later Minister of Agriculture of Canada and President of the Council of the Dominion of Canada.
· John Mitchell, prominent New York politician, the father of John Purroy Mitchell who was later Mayor of New York City.

You think YOU have to make TOUGH DECISIONS?

During World War II, with hard work and a great deal of luck, the British broke the secret code of the German High Command. Consequently, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his generals knew, in advance, many of the Nazi's plans; particularly for bombing campaigns against England.

When his intelligence officers told him of the Luftwaffe's plans to launch a major strike against the key industrial city of Coventry, Churchill, known for quick decisions on most matters, had one of the toughest decisions a leader would ever have to make.

1. Should he order the city evacuated and the RAF mobilized to repel the attack? By doing so, Britain would send a clear signal to the Nazis that their code had been broken, causing them to replace the code with one that may NEVER be solved.
Or ….

2. Does he keep silent and do nothing, thereby not letting the German's know that their code had been compromised? The result of such a decision would cause thousands of British civilians to meet violent deaths in the attack.

Seems like a "no brainer" doesn't it? How could a leader let thousands of innocent people die when he has the power to save them?

But consider this. With the war being fought on many fronts and with the impending invasion (D-Day) of Hitler's "Fortress Europe" looming on the horizon …. KNOWLEDGE OF NAZI PLANS WOULD BE ESSENTIAL IN ORDER TO SHORTEN THE WAR AND THUS SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES!

Churchill agonizingly weighed his options and decided not to evacuate Coventry. As the hour of the attack approached, imagine how he must have felt, alone at 10 Downing Street, receiving the reports over the phone.

"Sir! German bombers approaching Coventry!" ("I can still stop this!")
"Mr. Prime Minister! Bombing has commenced!" ("God help me! What have I done?")

“Destruction of human life and property!" ("Oh no! The children!")
History proved Churchill's decision to have been correct. Decoded messages of German plans gave the Allies an incredible advantage, DID help shorten the war and DID save millions of lives. (Consider also: Through decoded messages we learned the Germans were getting very close to splitting the atom. What would have been the consequences of a longer war with Hitler having a thermonuclear weapon he could deliver on a V-2 rocket and detonate over London, Manchester or Glasgow?)

Perhaps this story will help us to approach our decision-making from a different perspective. How many "REALLY TOUGH" decisions do we have to make in our lives?

Life Lesson Story

Making Quick Decisions...

A Major League fastball leaves the pitcher's hand about 55 feet from home plate, at a speed of 90+ miles per hour.

The ball reaches the plate in 4/10 second.

The hitter has 2/10 second to decide whether or not to swing and another 2/10 second (give or take a few 1/100 second) to execute the swing.

The pitch is only "hitable" about two feet of its flight, which figures out to 15/1,000 second.

Puts decision-making time frames in a different perspective doesn't it?

The I Can't Funeral
by Author Unknown

Donna's fourth grade classroom looked like many others I had seen in the past. The teacher's desk was in front and faced the students. The bulletin board featured student work. In most respects it appeared to be a typically traditional elementary classroom. Yet something seemed different that day I entered it for the first time.

My job was to make classroom visitations and encourage implementation of a training program that focused on language arts ideas that would empower students to feel good about themselves and take charge of their lives. Donna was one of the volunteer teachers who participated in this project.

I took an empty seat in the back of the room and watched. All the students were working on a task, filling a sheet of notebook paper with thoughts and ideas. The ten-year-old student next to me was filling her page with "I Can'ts". "I can't kick the soccer ball past second base." "I can't do long division with more than three numerals." "I can't get Debbie to like me." Her page was half full and she showed no signs of letting up. She worked on with determination and persistence. I walked down the row glancing at student's papers. Everyone was writing sentences, describing things they couldn't do.

By this time the activity engaged my curiosity, so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on but I noticed she too was busy writing. I felt it best not to interrupt. "I can't get John's mother to come for a teacher conference." "I can't get my daughter to put gas in the car." "I can't get Alan to use words instead of fists."

Thwarted in my efforts to determine why students and teacher were dwelling on the negative instead of writing the more positive "I Can" statements, I returned to my seat and continued my observations.

Students wrote for another ten minutes. They were then instructed to fold the papers in half and bring them to the front. They placed their "I Can't" statements into an empty shoe box. Then Donna added hers. She put the lid on the box, tucked it under her arm and headed out the door and down the hall.

Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Halfway down the hallway Donna entered the custodian's room, rummaged around and came out with a shovel. Shovel in one hand, shoe box in the other, Donna marched the students out to the school to the farthest corner of the playground. There they began to dig. They were going to bury their "I Can'ts"!

The digging took over ten minutes because most of the fourth graders wanted a turn. The box of "I Can'ts" was placed in a position at the bottom of the hole and then quickly covered with dirt. Thirty-one 10 and 11 year-olds stood around the freshly dug grave site. At this point Donna announced, "Boys and girls, please join hands and bow your heads." They quickly formed a circle around the grave, creating a bond with their hands.

They lowered their heads and waited. Donna delivered the eulogy.

"Friends, we gathered here today to honor the memory of 'I Can't.' While he was with us here on earth, he touched the lives of everyone, some more than others. We have provided 'I Can't' with a final resting place and a headstone that contains his epitaph. His is survived by his brothers and sisters, 'I Can', 'I Will', and 'I'm Going to Right Away'. They are not as well known as their famous relative and are certainly not as strong and powerful yet. Perhaps some day, with your help, they will make an even bigger mark on the world. May 'I Can't' rest in peace and may everyone present pick up their lives and move forward in his absence. Amen."

As I listened I realized that these students would never forget this day. Writing "I Can'ts", burying them and hearing the eulogy. That was a major effort on this part of the teacher. And she wasn't done yet.

She turned the students around, marched them back into the classroom and held a wake. They celebrated the passing of "I Can't" with cookies, popcorn and fruit juices. As part of the celebration, Donna cut a large tombstone from butcher paper. She wrote the words "I Can't" at the top and put RIP in the middle. The date was added at the bottom. The paper tombstone hung in Donna's classroom for the remainder of the year.

On those rare occasions when a student forgot and said, "I Can't", Donna simply pointed to the RIP sign. The student then remembered that "I Can't" was dead and chose to rephrase the statement. I wasn't one of Donna's students. She was one of mine. Yet that day I learned an enduring lesson from her as years later, I still envision that fourth grade class laying to rest, "I Can't".

Once there was a man walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked along, he began to see another man in the distance. As he got closer, he noticed the man was picking up starfish that had been washed ashore and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.

When the man asked what he was doing, he said, "I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the beach. If I don't throw them back, they'll die from lack of oxygen." "I understand," replied the visitor, "but there must be hundreds of starfish on this beach. You can't possibly get to all of them. And this is happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down the coast. Can't you see that you really cannot make a difference?" The man smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, "Made a difference to that one."

Our lives do influence others...for good or bad. Even small insignificant acts set in motion great things. An encouraging word. A cold soda. The first, "Good Morning!" A strong handshake. Your every act or attitude will make a difference to just one! ...In everything set them an example by doing what is good ...show integrity."

All I Ever Really
Needed to Know I Learned
in Kindergarten.
By: Robert Fulghum
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most of what I really need to know about how to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.
These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life.
Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup. . . they all die. So do we.
And then remember the book about Dick and Jane and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and sane living.
Think of what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about 3 o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nations to always put things back where we found them and clean up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mind set of the incoming freshmen.

Here is the list for (2001).

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982.

They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.

They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.

Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.

There has been only one Pope.

They were 10 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Tiananmen Square means nothing to them.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums.

The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.

They have never owned a record player.

They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

They may have never heard of an 8 track.

The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.

As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents.

They have always had an answering machine.

Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels and would have no clue what the "U" channel is, nor have they seen a black-and-white
TV.

They have always had cable.

There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

They were born the year that Walkman were introduced by Sony.

Roller-skating has always meant inline for them.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They have never seen Larry Bird play.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as W.W.I, W.W.II and the Civil War.

They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: Where's the beef? I'd walked a mile for a Camel, or de plane, de plane.

They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea
who J.R. is.

The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew where it was.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups.

McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

There has always been MTV.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other old fogies.

What is Success - A Poem
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.

Pasta tips
— When cooked, poor quality pasta will be heavier; spaghetti will be less bouncy and short pasta can split open. Good pasta should bounce and slip as it lands on the plate, and be firm to the bite, or al dente.
— Always boil pasta in a lot of water, a minimum of 1 litre per 100 gm of dried pasta.
— Add the salt, just as the water boils, then drop in the pasta. The salt will raise the temperature of the water slightly, so that it continues to boil when the pasta is added.
— Mix the pasta with the sauce in the pan over a low heat for a minute, it will amalgamate the flavour and finish the cooking of the pasta to perfection.

Post-it Notes

The 3M Company encourages creativity from its employees. The company allows its researchers to spend 15 percent of their time on any project that interests them. This attitude has brought fantastic benefits not only to the employees but to the 3M Company itself Many times, a spark of an idea turned into a successful product has boosted 3M's profits tremendously.

Some years ago, a scientist in 3M's commercial office took advantage of this 15 percent creative time. This scientist, Art Fry, came up with an idea for one of 3M's best-selling products. It seems that Art Fry dealt with a small irritation every Sunday as he sang in the church choir. After marking his pages in the hymnal with small bits of paper, the small pieces would invariably fall out all over the floor.

Suddenly, an idea struck Fry. He remembered an adhesive developed by a colleague that everyone thought was a failure because it did not stick very well. "I coated the adhesive on a paper sample," Fry recalls, "and I found that it was not only a good bookmark, but it was great for writing notes. It will stay in place as long as you want it to, and then you can remove it without damage."

Yes, Art Fry hit the jackpot. The resulting product was called Post-it! and has become one of 3M's most successful office products.
